SLA vs FDM — What's the Difference?

We use SLA (Stereolithography) — the premium technology for detail and finish quality. Here's how it compares to the more common FDM printers you may have seen.

SLA (What We Use)FDM (Common Home Printers)
How It WorksA UV light hardens liquid resin into a solid shape, one ultra-thin layer at a time.A hot nozzle melts plastic and squeezes it out layer by layer, like a high-tech glue gun.
Surface FinishSilky smooth straight off the printer — details are crisp and clean.Visible ridges between layers. Needs sanding to look smooth.
DetailPicks up tiny features like facial expressions, text, and fabric texture. Great for figures and jewellery.Decent for larger shapes, but small features can look lumpy or rough.
StrengthRigid and solid for display pieces. Our Tough resin flexes like a plastic bottle cap — strong enough for functional parts and wearables. Can be very strong with the right material, especially for big structural parts, brackets, and enclosures.
After PrintingQuick wash and UV cure (~15 min). Then it's ready to paint or use as-is.Snap off supports, sand down the ridges. Getting a smooth finish takes more elbow grease.
Best ForCosplay props, figures, miniatures, jewellery patterns, anything where looks and detail matter.Large structural parts, functional brackets, quick and cheap draft prototypes.
TL;DR →
Think of FDM like a hot glue gun building shapes — quick and affordable but rough. SLA is like a sculptor using light to carve perfect detail from liquid — the results are stunning.

From CAD to Casting

We offer jewellery prototyping using Formlabs Castable Wax resins — specialist materials designed for the lost-wax casting process used by goldsmiths and silversmiths.

💍 Castable Wax Resin

20% wax-filled resin for printing ultrafine casting patterns. Zero ash, clean burnout, Form 4 compatible.

Post-Cure
Not required

Printed patterns are strong enough to handle immediately — no post-curing needed. The high green strength holds shape on thin structures like filigree and wire patterns. After a quick alcohol wash, parts are ready for spruing and investment. Tested with silver, 18K gold, and bronze.

💍 Castable Wax 40 Resin

40% wax-filled for heavier, chunkier pieces. Easiest casting workflow on the market.

Very low

Designed for heavier jewellery like signet rings, medallions, and chunky bridal pieces. The higher wax content gives the closest experience to traditional wax carving — compatible with a wide range of gypsum investments and lost-wax casting conditions.

How It Works →
Send us your CAD file (or reference images), we print the casting pattern in castable wax resin, and you or your goldsmith uses it in a standard lost-wax casting process to produce the final piece in precious metal. We print the pattern — you cast the jewellery.

Safe by Design

Our operations are light and clean: desktop printers, airbrush station with extraction, no heavy machinery, noise, dust, or hazardous materials.

Finished Prints Are Safe to Handle

Once washed and UV-cured, prints are inert solid plastic — completely safe to touch, display, and use.

🧴

Liquid Resin Requires Care (We Handle It)

Uncured liquid resin needs gloves and ventilation. All resin handling happens in our workshop; you only ever receive the safe, finished product.

🏅

Tough 1500 — Certified Skin Safe

Meets ISO 10993-1 biocompatibility for extended skin contact. Safe for wearable cosplay and fitted components.

🚫

No Harmful ACMO

Unlike cheaper resins, Formlabs does not use ACMO (acryloylmorpholine) — a skin sensitiser found in many budget 3D printing resins.

🌬️

Clean Workshop Environment

Our airbrush station runs with full extraction. No fumes, no dust, no mess. The printers are fully enclosed and quiet.

⚠️

Not Food-Safe

Our prints are not rated for direct food or drink contact. Perfect for decorative, functional, and wearable use.

From File to Finished Product

Walk in with an idea, walk out with a finished piece.

Send Us Your File or Idea

Provide an STL or OBJ from any 3D software (Blender, ZBrush, Fusion 360, TinkerCAD). No file? Send reference images or pop in and describe what you want.

We Prepare & Print

We orient your model, add supports, and send it to the printer. UV light cures liquid resin layer by layer into your part.

Wash & Cure

The raw print is washed in isopropyl alcohol then UV-cured to reach full strength. About 15 minutes total.

Clean Up & Finish

We remove supports, sand contact points, and inspect. Ready for use — or we move to finishing.

Prime, Paint & Detail (Optional)

SLA's smooth surface takes paint beautifully. We sand, prime, airbrush, hand-paint, and seal using professional Vallejo paints.

Collect or Delivery

Pick up from 19 Bath Street or we can arrange local delivery across Jersey.

B2B & Sample Packs

Need branded items, prototypes, or something custom for your business? We offer sample packs and volume printing for local companies.

📦 What We Can Do For Your Business

Custom branded items, prototypes, display pieces, and more — tailored to your industry.

We'll put together a sample pack so you can see and feel the quality before committing to a larger order. Perfect for testing ideas, impressing clients, or adding something unique to your venue.

Got Questions?

Here are the answers to the most common things people ask us.

How long does a print take?
Most prints on the Form 4 finish in under 2 hours. Larger items on the Form 4L can take up to 6 hours. Speed depends on height, not complexity — a full plate prints just as fast as a single piece.
How big can you print?
Form 4: up to 20 × 12.5 × 21 cm. Form 4L: up to 35.3 × 19.6 × 35 cm. Larger items can be split and assembled seamlessly.
Are the finished prints safe to handle?
Absolutely. Once washed and UV-cured, prints are solid inert plastic — safe to touch and display. Our Tough 1500 is even certified for extended skin contact (ISO 10993-1). We don't use cheap resins with harmful ACMO.
Can you print in colour?
Our general purpose resin comes in grey, white, black, and clear. For custom colours, we airbrush after printing using Vallejo paints — a much better, more durable result than coloured filament.
How strong are the prints?
Very. Our standard resin produces a hard, rigid plastic — solid enough for display pieces, props, and detailed models. Our Tough resin flexes like a plastic bottle cap instead of snapping, making it great for functional parts, wearable cosplay, and marine fittings.
Can I paint or modify the prints myself?
Yes! SLA's smooth surface takes paint beautifully. Acrylic, spray, primer — all work great. We sell Vallejo paints and brushes in-store if you want to do it yourself.
What's the finest detail you can achieve?
50 microns (0.05mm) — finer than a human hair. For jewellery casting patterns, we can go down to 25 microns with anti-aliasing for sub-pixel smoothness.
What file format do I need?
STL or OBJ work best. Export from Blender, ZBrush, Fusion 360, TinkerCAD, and more. No file? Send reference images or pop in — we can design from scratch.
What about copyrighted characters?
We can print fan-made or licensed 3D models. For copyrighted characters we recommend officially licensed files or original inspired designs.
Do you offer jewellery casting?
We print the castable wax patterns — the step between your digital design and the metalwork. The printed pattern goes into a standard lost-wax process. We use Formlabs Castable Wax resins tested with silver, 18K gold, and bronze.
Can prints go outdoors?
Short-term, yes. For long-term outdoor use, we recommend a UV-resistant clear coat. Tough 1500 V2 has improved UV ageing performance.
How much does it cost?
Depends on size, complexity, and finish. For custom one-offs, 3D printing is very cost-effective vs traditional manufacturing. Pop in or message us for a free quote — no obligation.
Can I just walk in?
Absolutely — that's what we're here for. Browse the shop, watch the printers, check out our Gunpla kits and Vallejo paints, or chat about a custom project. No appointment needed.
